Racecourse Cup Report

A bit of an early start for some arriving at 7.45 am but coffee, biscuits and a Racecourse family reunion revived us all!  A few balls on the range and ready for the off!

We had 16 players today competing for the Racecourse Cup - an individual strokeplay competition for one of our most prestigious of our trophies (in the day).  The sun shines on the righteous and today indeed it did!  Slight cloud and a chill in the air at first tee off but come the back 9, the sun was blazing down.

As always, the course at Deanwood was immaculate and, in early Spring, a joy to play - definite compliments to the green keepers.

Winner of the Ladies longest drive on the 4th/13th was Shey Walder.  Longest drive for the Men was on the tricky 9th /18th  -  but Scott Holland powered it toward the Bell to win.  Winner of nearest the pin on the 7th /16th was tense … it looked like Roy had clinched it at the 16th but, Scott pulled off the winner from the group behind by a short inch!  In fact, the ink hadn't dried on Roy's name:

Lowest gross scores today were shared by Jeremy Twaits and Steve Cobb (also lowest handicap) - both have their stories to tell about the one that got away!!  But there was a theme today and that was Scott Holland … Winner of the Racecourse Cup by one shot from Jeremy (last year's winner) by one shot from Dean Butler.  From a net scoring point of view, we nailed every digit in the 60's so how close was that!!

Lunch of sandwiches and chips (plenty for all, thank you Snowy at Deanwood), appreciated by all after a great morning of golf.  Wonderful to see old friends … hopefully a great day was had by all and Scott has promised to treasure the Cup until we compete for it again in 2018!!

Thank you everyone and please watch out for the next Trophy match information.

Dianne.

Newbury Racecourse Society

Dear Friends

I hope you are all well and either enjoying your golf at your new clubs or maybe even enjoying a break from golf and reminiscing about the "good old days at the Racecourse"!

You may remember that many of us expressed a desire to play golf together again in the form of a "Racecourse Society" - and to play out some of our more prestigious trophy matches.  As we approach Spring 2017, it is now time to put this into action!  The "NRGC" website is operational and will become the hub for event information, updates, your news etc. and can still be found at www.nrgc.co.uk

The general idea is to play the following matches:  Bogey Competition, Carole Scott Cup, John Ives Memorial Cup, Parker Hart Trophy and Racecourse Cup.  The trophies for these are safely stored away in readiness!  The venues will ideally be quite local for us and include lunch/refreshment and the aim is also to subsidise the cost of these events, as far as is possible, from remaining club funds.

The first step however, is to establish how many of you will still be interested to take part in all or any of these matches.

Could I ask you please, in the first instance, to let me know if you are interested to play - or at least to receive further details?  If you are not interested in taking part, Just send me an email and let me know - dianne.mcintyre@nrgc.co.uk

If you are in touch with any ex-members and would like to spread the word around - please do!

One other event I would like to mention is the Thursday Evening League.  We played this at Deanwood over a 13 week period last year from early June to early September.  It is the intention to hold this competition again this year and more information will be put on www.nrgc.co.uk  nearer the time.  However, can I please ask you to let me know if you intend to join us …. Remember, it runs for around 3 months, is a 9 hole competition with starting times from approx. 5.30 pm and it doesn't matter if you can't play every week!  Only your best 7 rounds count!

So, to recap, this is what we'd like to know:

  • Would you like to play in any of the Trophy Matches?
  • Do you want to be removed from the mailing list?
  • Would you like to play in the Thursday Evening League?

Looking forward to hearing from you - and if any of you would like to join in with the organising - volunteers welcome!!

Kind regards
Dianne McIntyre

TEL - Final week

The 13th and final week of the Thursday Evening League was played today at Deanwood Park. I think it's the first time the league has been played that we haven't lost any weeks to inclement weather!!

Eight players took part this evening with the weekly winner being decided on count-back. Tim Page just pipped Jeremy Twaits after both registered 20pts. Dianne McIntyre was third on 18pts and Geoff Denner just one point further back.

The best 5 overall winner was in doubt right up to the end but 20pts for Jeremy Twaits this evening off a vastly reduced handicap sealed the victory on 99pts. Dianne McIntyre took second spot on 97pts closely followed by Mike Miller on 96pts.
As it is Olympic year, medals were presented to the top 3 plus some excellent prizes.

A huge thank-you must go to Dianne for not only playing every single week, but organising the starts, collecting fees, processing the scores (along with Jeremy) and organising all the prizes and medals. Well done Dianne!!

Winner - Jeremy Twaits
2nd - Dianne McIntyre
3rd - Mike Miller

TEL - Week12

Seven players for the penultimate week of the Thursday Evening League and the weather is still being kind - not one week missed so far. Hope I'm not tempting fate!!! This week's winner was Jeremy Twaits just edging out Dianne McIntyre on count-back after both scored 19pts. Tim Page (18pts) was third and Raymond Bilton (16pts) was in fourth place.

The overall Best5 competition could not be any closer. With his win this week, Jeremy has de-throned long time leader Mike Miller to go ahead by a single point. Dianne McIntyre is on the same score as Mike with a slightly lower average. Fair play to Dianne, she has played every single week!!! Is it too late for Rowland and Geoff? We will find out next week!!!

TEL - Week11

Eight players for this week's Evening League at Deanwood Park. With good scores come league handicap reductions but that still doesn't seem to stop more good scores being returned!! Rowland Barnfield was this week's winner with a massive 24pts. Runner-up Jeremy Twaits still managed 18pts off half his club handicap with Dianne McIntyre still scoring consistently in third place.

Just 2 weeks to go now before the season long best 5 ladder is decided. Mike Miller still holds a slender lead on 96pts closely followed by Jeremy Twaits, Dianne McIntyre, Rowland Barnfield & Geoff Denner. Too close to call at this stage!!!

TEL - Week10

Seven players for tonight's TEL at Deanwood including guest Keith Collins and a welcome return to Steve Cobb unfortunately playing with borrowed clubs after his were stolen 3 weeks ago ... Grrr!!!

The winner this evening was Geoff Denner with 21pts followed by Dianne McIntyre 19pts and Rowland Barnfield on 18pts.

The end of season Best5 table is closing  up a bit now. Mike Miller still leads the way on 96pts closely followed by Dianne McIntyre, Jeremy Twaits and Geoff Denner. Still all to play for!!
