Set Back for Scratch Team
A minor set back today as we suffered our first defeat at the hands of Weybrook Park at Donnington Valley. Although we lost 5-2, the team battled well and we were very close to escaping with a draw. The most important thing is that, as a club, we can compete and as the season goes on the more I am confident the results will prove me right.

John Ives Memorial Cup
In beautiful spring-like weather, the John Ives Memorial Cup was played today. This is a fourball event which was played as strokeplay for the first time this year. Although the greens were less than ideal with the annual hollow tining and dressing in progress at the moment, this did not detract from the success of the event.
The runaway winners today, who obviously weren't affect by any of the conditions, were Club Captain John Butcher and Sian Soanes who carded a brilliant better-ball score of nett 61. Runners-up with nett 67 were Mark France and Shey Walder who just beat John Graham and Ian Folwell on count-back.

Another win in the Scratch League
Second game of the season was played at Sand Martins which ended with another WIN. The club is top of the league - this time we won 4-3 in the 'local derby' against Donnington Valley. This season, with the exception of Jimmy and Tony who are proven winners over 4 years, the team is very new to the Scratch League which is why in the first four games I will 'mix and match' to find out about players, then the selection will based on what I consider to be the 'best team' It is all about a winning mentality!! - therefore the number of games played in the first four games has no bearing on who will play for the rest of the season.
The picture for those of you who don't know(left to right) Tony Glover, Curtis Macgeever, Jimmy Green, George Stockley, Lloyd Childs and (the funny man) Conor Dick.

Scratch League team starts with a win
The Scratch League season started at Caversham Heath last Saturday with the team wearing their new red shirts and cream trousers. The format is a team of six players playing 3 foursomes matches off scratch (no handicaps) on a neutral venue. In my opinion foursomes is the ultimate test of golf, testing not only the golf skills but the attitude, temperament and relationship between players. This was no better demonstrated than the Ryder Cup pairing of Woods and Mickelson which proved to be a total failure (egos came before the good of the team). I believe we have a squad of not only talented players but a good spirit and a desire for success.
I now honestly think we can compete with any club and hold our own. This was demonstrated on Saturday with a 5-2 win over a strong Sandmartins team that only just missed out on promotion last season. I researched their handicaps and found that they would have been giving a couple of shots had it been a handicap event - that makes our victory even sweeter.
Well done Conor Dick & Curtis Macgeever - Tony Glover & Charlie Butler - Ian Martinez & George Stockley.
In addition to these players we have:
Jimmy Green, Lloyd Childs, Paul Seymour, Joe Bell, Aaron Stockley, Carl McCartney and Andy Stockley all wishing to be included in a very strong squad. Many Clubs would be envious of our strength in depth.
If you wish to view details of our progress through the season there is a section called SCRATCH TEAM NEWS on the main notice board or you can visit the League web site through a link from the club site or direct to www.rdicl.com
Good luck to all who represent the club with pride, determination and the will to win.

First round victory in the Hillman
NRGC played and won 4-3 in a hard fought match against Flackwell Heath Golf Club yesterday in the first round of the BB&O Hillman trophy. At one stage NRGC seem to be cruising to a victory, but the visitors came back well over the last six holes making the deciding last game the most important of the day. Mark Richardson playing his first game for the club produced a win for NRGC. A great day was had by all in the fantastic weather.
Well done to our team of Jim Green , Paul Seymour, Carl McCartney , Jon Miller, Nigel Huszarik, Ian Folwell and Mark Richardson. Lets hope we can keep winning to progress further in this competition.
Thank-you - John Butcher (Club Captain).

April Medal
At last ... spring like weather (not quite shorts yet Mr France!!) was welcomed today as 48 players (40 men and 8 ladies) competed for the April medals; and (for the men) a place in the PGA Pro-Am. The improving condition of the course was reflected in the better scoring this month.
Division 1
This month's winner with a fine best gross of the day (75) was Curtis Macgeever. Runner-up with another great score (gross 76 nett 71) was Charlie Butler. Third place on countback went to Jim Green whose gross level par back 9 ensured he beat George Stockley and Jim Purvis on the same nett score.

Division 2
The middle division was won with a fine putting and ball-striking display by Roy Martinez (nett 66). Roy, who received a 2 stroke cut in his handicap and promotion back to Div 1, shared the lowest gross in this division with runner-up Gordon Souter who finished just one shot behind (nett 67). One shot further back, two players battled it out for third spot with Roger Tillett just beating John Baron on countback.

Division 3
The winner with the lowest gross in this division was Stuart Briginshaw (gross 86 nett 65). This earned Stuart a 2 shot cut in his handicap as well as promotion to Div 2 and was his first win since Aug 2002. Those hours and hours of post-round practice have obviously paid dividends for Stuart at long last. Stuart would like to thank his sponsors (Carling & Fosters) for sticking by him during the lean times. Runner-up was Mike Chamberlain with a nett 69 followed by last month's winner Jeremy Twaits with nett 71.

Ladies
The ladies division was decided on countback. Maria Tillett (with the lowest gross for the ladies) just beat last month's winner Karen Hugo as both carded nett 72's. Third place was also decided on countback with Sandra Chamberlain just ahead of Sarah Purvis.

PGA Pro-Am
As mentioned above, this month's medal was the qualifier for a place in the PGA Pro-Am. This goes to Stuart Briginshaw with his nett 65 (the lowest of the day).

April Fool Texas Scramble
Twenty teams of three competed for the prizes in today's April Fool Texas Scramble. Although there was a stiff breeze, it did not rain (!!) and considering the weather we have endured over the past week, the course was in very good condition.
The new 20% stroke allowance has certainly made for a closer contest in these competitions and today was no exception with the top ten teams only separated by 2.0 strokes.
The eventual winners on countback were John Christopher, Brian Matthews and Lizzie Swallow. Lizzie was also in the winning team last year, so obviously a scramble specialist. Runners-up with the same score (59.6) were Mark France, Tony Glover and Danny Glover. Well done to Danny - his first trophy to come on next Presentation Evening. He must be a strong lad having to carry Tony and Mark round the course !! In third place with a score of 60.4 were Jon Miller, Jamie Prater and Sean Sargeant, who as usual all had different views about who was carrying whom ?!?

April Weekday Stableford
A field of 32 men and ladies braved the conditions to compete for the April Weekday Stableford on 1st and 2nd April, although not all of them stayed the course. We also welcomed a number of visitors for this competition, specifically from Newbury and Crookham.
The winner with a score of 39 points was the in-form George Stockley. The runner-up spot was decided on count-back with John Baron just pipping John Graham, both having scored 38 points. Fourth place went to Mark Richardson one point further back on 37 points.
