Macmillan Mammoth Quiz

The mammoth quiz in aid of Macmillan Cancer charity was held on Friday evening in the Clubhouse. This was a nationwide event with identical quizzes being held at the same time in many other locations throughout the country and was an attempt to secure a place in the Guinness Book of Records.
The quiz evening at the Clubhouse was a huge success with 103 competitors taking part and in all, we managed to raise £653.26 for Macmillan.

The overall winners with a superb effort were the two-man team named "Fantasy Ryder Cup" consisting of Steve Mitchell and Jon Miller on 83 pts. They are pictured below with quiz-master Chris Moore and one of the team of organisers, Judy Willson.

Runners-up were the team "Magnificent 7" (73 pts), closely followed by "5 1/2 Brains" (71 pts).

Huge thanks to the organising team of Chris Moore, Judy Willson, Mike Willson and Paul Tebbutt along with Max Nicholls and Ken Richards whose assistance on the night was invaluable. Also thanks to chairman of the Wessex Sports and Social club, Mike Smith and his team of bar and kitchen staff for the catering during the evening.
Most of all, thanks to all the people who came along and took part in the quiz in support of this great cause.

Macmillan Mammoth Quiz

We are running a Mammoth Quiz in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support THIS FRIDAY NIGHT - 24th February 2012. The quiz proper starts at 7.45

The aim is to run the same quiz simultaneously in various locations - and to gain entry into the GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS for largest number of simultaneous quizzes in 2012.

We need a few more teams here at the club - 6 people in a team; £5 per head, plus a break for supper in the middle of the comp. Just add your name plus your team name and members behind the bar - moneys will be collected on the night. DO HELP OUR EFFORT AND BRING A TEAM TO SUPPORT THIS WORTHWHILE CAUSE.

IN ADDITION - we would like the help of two volunteers to join us for the evening as witnesses to this Guinness Book of Record attempt. You will have to get the signatures of every member of each team, and verify that they took part in the entire competition, If you can't get a team, please support us as witnesses.

February Medal

The February medal was finally played today having been postponed earlier in the month. Once again, conditions were challenging in a very stiff south-westerly wind for the last Stableford medal of the winter and unfortunately a bit of rain for the last few groups. Thirty-three players (26 men and 7 ladies) competed for the prizes today.

Division 1
Winner of the top division today was Club Captain Jon Miller with a score of 36 points, his first medal win since Jan 2007. Runner-up on 35 points was Dave Warwick followed by John Day who just beat Carl McCartney on count back after both carded 33 points.
Full result - click here.

Division 2
A very close tussle in this division today. Andrew Buchanan finally came out on top from Bob Stevenson on count-back after both scored 36 points. Andrew must like February. He won the February medal last year with exactly the same score!! One point behind the leading two in third place was Jeremy Twaits just edging out John Baron on count-back.

Division 3
Best score of the day (39 points) went to Mike Chamberlain who was the clear winner in this division. Runner-up on 31 points was Ofer Ben-David followed by John Swallow one point further back.

Seniors

The seniors played two separate events today.
The first was a series of five four ball matches against the juniors. The juniors showed their superiority winning two of the matches and halving the other three. Well played the juniors!!
Those seniors not involved in the matches played a singles Stableford. The winner on count back with a classy birdie on the last hole, was Allan Trotman with 37 points. Runner-up was Paul Tebbutt on the same score followed by Derrick Perrin on 35 points.

February Junior Medal

Another small field for this months Junior medal played yesterday. The winner with a great score of 38 points was Luke Bannister. Runner-up on 32 points was George Baker.

Early days yet, but this result puts Luke ahead in the 2012 Junior Masters table followed by George Baker. Full listing - click here.

Seniors Bowmaker

With the weather more suitable for polar bears and emperor penguins, twenty-eight hardy seniors ventured out onto the bleak tundra to play a Bowmaker Stableford competition (best two scores out of three on each hole) today. Rock solid, unreceptive greens, frozen fairways and tees that you couldn't get a peg into were not ideal conditions, but there were still some great scores returned!!!
The winning team with a fantastic total of 81 points were Malcolm Passey, Mike Pritchard and Linda Vale. Runners-up on 76 points were John Day, Roy Whiting and Jan Hinks. Third place went to Sam Whiting, Richard Hook and Gordon Turner one point further back.
Thanks to birthday-boy Jim Green for providing the wine prizes for nearest-the-pins.
