Thursday Evening League - Week1

After two false starts, the Thursday Evening League finally got under way tonight. As usual in week 1, all members of each eight-person team were eligible to play. For all subsequent weeks (except the final Saturday) only four members from each team will play on the night. With only eight teams participating this year instead of ten, we should see slightly earlier finishes than in previous years.
This week's top team were Easily Second, followed by Bottle Jobs then Birdies and Bogeymen. The weekly winner this week with an impressive 23 points was Paul Bennelick. Three other players returned 22 points each - Steve Bonner, Jim Green and Dan Green.

NRGC vs Donnington Valley

The first men's match of the year was played out under (mostly) sunny skies, with Donnington Valley the opponents. An exceptionally close match unfolded, with no match being won by a margin greater than 2&1 and four results determined on the final green. Happily, on this occasion it fell in our favour, with Newbury Racecourse emerging as victors by 4 matches to 2. Thanks and well played to all 12 members of the team.

The day was enjoyed by all and some very good golf was played, despite some apparently sluggish starts after eating too much of the tasty cooked breakfast beforehand! Notably, there were also some great comments from our visitors, who remarked upon how much the course, and especially the greens, had improved since we last hosted them two years ago.

The next men's match will be this Sunday (20th May) at Hennerton GC. There are still a couple of places available in the team, so if you are interested in playing, please contact Jon Miller (07903 870036) or Jeremy Twaits (07956 095539).

Bader Cup

At last some decent weather!!!
Fourteen pairings competed today in the lovely conditions in this Mixed Greensomes Stableford competition with the golf course looking great. This competition is played as part of a national event with the winners going forward to play in one of the various regional finals.
The worthy winners today were Jim Green and Fay Unsworth with a score of 43 points - an excellent score achieved playing of a combined 9 handicap. Jim and Fay will go forward to the regional final to be played at Newbury & Crookham on Monday 13th August. Runners-up were Roger and Maria Tillett who just edged out John Butcher and Sian Soanes on count-back after both scored 41 points.
Full result - click here.

This event counts towards the season-long Order of Merit which is very nip and tuck at this stage. Roger Tillett has just edged into the lead closely followed by Kim Richardson, Fay Unsworth and Maria Tillett. Still plenty of points to play for!!

Edward Pearce Trophy

The Edward Pearce Trophy was played today with 34 seniors (29 men and 5 ladies) taking part. With the "heavy dew" we've had recently, the course is still playing long so it was a welcome relief for the men to play from the yellow tees in this Stableford event!
It was a very close contest with the winner being decided on count-back. Geoff Denner came out on top from Raymond Bilton after both returned 39 points apiece. Third place was sealed by Mike Pritchard just behind the leading two on 38 points. The top lady was Sam Whiting.
Full result - click here.

May Medal

A pretty poor turn out for the May medal last weekend with only 24 players (22 men and 2 ladies) taking part. But the medals still have to be won, even with a small field.

Max Nicholls did just that in the top division with a fantastic score of gross 72 (nett 70) to take the top prize. Runner-up was Ian Folwell who just edged out newly-promoted Josh Wallin on count-back.
Full result - click here.
Jeremy Twaits claimed his first division 2 medal since his promotion in 2010 with a fine nett 68. Ian Turner was runner-up in front of John Baron and Paul Hickey.
Full result - click here.
Ofer Ben-David was back in the winners circle again after his last medal in Dec 2011 scoring a nett 69. Nick Turner took the runners-up spot from Andy Tooley.

Sam Whiting took the ladies medal with a nett 78 from Maria Tillett.

Seniors May Medal

A rainless competition at last!!! Although the course is still quite wet and playing very long off the back tees.
Thirty-seven players (34 men and 3 ladies) competed today for the prizes. As there were only three ladies entered, the competition was played as a mixed-gender medal (ie. no separate medal for the ladies).
The clear winner today, and the only player to break par was Malcolm Passey with an excellent score of nett 69 (gross 84 - the lowest of the day). Runner-up was Ray Tillen with a score of nett 72. One shot further back was Paul Tebbutt in third place. Full result - click here.
Only two 2's today ... Derrick Perrin at the 2nd and Bob Stevenson at the 14th.
