Seniors Bogey

Thirty three seniors (29 men and 4 ladies) competed today in a bogey competition. There was a chilly wind blowing across the course but. for a nice change, the sun was shining and not a drop of rain to be seen!!

The top three players all returned the same score of +1 so the result was decided on count-back. The winner was John Clark followed by Stephen Vale then Richard Aldred in third spot. Full result - click here.

**  Presentation of golf prizes (Prizes for top 6 teams, plus 2 other spot prizes)

**  Finally, some lovely items will be auctioned.

**  A few words from Mrs W.

The aim of the golf tournament is for members and friends to play a round of golf in Mike's memory and raise money for a Therapy Garden at West Berkshire Hospital.  Mike wanted to give some money to the Hospital as they looked after him so well over the Christmas Period of 2012.   Had he been in Highclere Ward during the summer months, I am sure he would have loved to be taken out into the garden (had it been there at the time).,

The Golf prizes themselves, plus the table top quiz prizes are all about Mike's favourite things in life - gin and tonic, wine and smokey bacon crisps!!!!!!!   The tables have been given a lemon/lime decoration - as they were added to his G & T !!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike was, as well as being an accountant, a Master Baker.  His last role within RHM was as Head of non-bread products nationally, so the tables have been given names like The Crumpets, The Hot Cross Buns etc etc.  That will also explain the use of wooden spoons!!!!!!!!!!!

The family will hopefully be around as some time during the day, including 3 of the grandchildren, daughter Nicky and daughter in law Penny.  Son David may manage to join us later in the day, but unfortunately he will be on his last day of a Cricket course to enable him in future to coach under 13 players.  His Dad would be so proud of him.

Please enjoy the day, have fun as Mike would have wished.  Thank you all for coming and making this day possible.

Astres Foursomes

Eight pairings took part today in the Astres Foursomes Stableford on a wild and windy day at the racecourse. Interesting playing foursomes on a nine-hole course as you eventually get a turn to tee off on all the holes whether it be the front or back nine!!
The winners today with a score of 34pts were John Day & Jason Allum. Runners-up, just one point further back were Derrick Perrin & Dean Butler followed by Steve Simm & Rowland Barnfied on 31pts.

Seniors February Medal

After two "false starts" earlier this month due to the weather and ground conditions, the seniors finally managed to play their February Medal today. The 1st/10th still had a bit of standing water, but no problem to negotiate this. Our thanks go to the greens staff for manning the pumps and getting the course and greens into a very playable condition.
This month's medal was played as a mixed Stableford with 26 men and 3 ladies taking part. The clear winner with 38pts was Chris Piper. Runner-up was Roy Whiting who just beat Richard Aldred on count-back after both scored 37pts.

Presentation Evening

The annual Presentation Evening was held at the Clubhouse last Saturday 1st Feb where all the competition winners from 2013 received their awards and trophies. It was a particularly poignant event as this was the very last Presentation Evening that will be held in the existing clubhouse.
As well as the competition winners, there were some special awards presented. Firstly to Rachel for all her hard work both on the evening itself providing an excellent meal for everyone, but especially over many years in the clubhouse. We will certainly miss the Wessex Club and a huge thank-you must go to Mike Smith and his team for all their support over the years. We wish them all the best in the future.
Next a special award to Rowland Barnfield who competed in no less than 78 consecutive club medals since August 2007 (winning 7 of them). Some flowers were also presented to Mrs Barnfield as a thank-you, she also thanked the club for taking Rowland off her hands so many times!!!
Also, some beverages were awarded to our green-keepers for all their hard work over the year. We all think it's a lovely job riding along on a mower in shirt sleeves in the summer, but it's a year-round job and nobody envies them in the winter!!
Last, but not least, the Captain's Endeavour Award was presented to Derrick Perrin for his excellent support for the club over many years, but in particular more recently where he has taken charge of the successful weekend roll-ups and responsibilities for ensuring the clubhouse was opened on time!!
This was also a charity evening on behalf of Great Ormond Street Hospital. Long standing member Brian Grace volunteered to have his head shaved and adorned to raise money for the charity and there was also a raffle. Over £950 was raised over the course of the evening for the charity. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Lastly, a big thank-you to captains Paul Hickey and Sian Soanes and the rest of the committee for their hard work organising a very successful evening.
Thanks also to Sam Whiting for the pictures below.
