A good field of twenty-seven pairings tee'd it up today to compete for the prizes in the Parker Hart Fourball. The weather was ideal and thanks must again go to Richard Holmes and his team for preparing the course in superb condition.
The competition is played as a better-ball strokeplay event off 3/4 handicaps and the scoring was very close with six shots separating the top seventeen places.
Today's winners were John Day and David Warwick with nett 62. Runners-up, just one stroke back were Chris Adlem and Sarah Purvis. Third place was decided on count-back - Ian Folwell and Stuart Briginshaw just pipped Roger & Maria Tillet, Carl & John McCartney and Phil & John Bye after they all carded nett 64.

As this is a "board" competition, it counts towards the Order of Merit award. Andrew Buchanan still leads the way from Fay Unsworth, Carl McCartney and Cilla Osgood.

Thursday Evening League - Week 10
What a difference a week makes! Last week we had to cancel the league because of torrential rain and the course flooding, this week beautiful sunshine and not a breath of wind.
Conditions were perfect this evening and many players took full advantage. Nine players scored 20 points or more this evening. John Christopher (Cheap & Cheerful) scored 21, Matt Baillie (Birdies & Bogeymen) scored 22, but this weeks individual winner was Aaron Stockley (Puurre) who just beat team-mate Paul Seymour (Puurre) on countback after both scored 23 points.
The team scores this week were even closer with the top three teams all scoring 61 points. Birdies & Bogeymen came out on top courtesy of their fourth score followed by Cheap & Cheerful then Puurre.
Easily Second still top the league 7 points ahead of Birdies & Bogeymen. These two teams have opened up a bit of a gap at the top, but the other teams have not admitted defeat yet!!
In the Best5 competition, Danny Glover still tops the table from Luke Bannister both on 100 points, but there are still a few weeks left for the chasing pack.

NRGC vs Theale
The annual NRGC v Theale GC Silver Plate match took place today at Theale, NRGC held a 4 - 2 lead from the first leg meaning 2 1/2 points were needed to take the Silver Plate for the first time back to the Racecourse.
Jon Miller spent weeks trying to sort out his team pairings, hoping his new found management skills would come in handy in search of the 2 1/2 points he worried and talked about so much since the first leg.
The great news was the day finished 3 - 3 thus a 7 - 5 victory and a home-coming for the Silver Plate at last.
The weather was great and the company good all day, we all enjoyed it very much and I think that can be seen within the victory photo.
Thanks to all the players for supporting and playing in this match and I think we can all look forward to defending the Silver Plate next year.

Thursday Evening League - Week 9
Due to torrential rain and the subsequent flooding on the course, week 9 of the Thursday Evening League matches had to be cancelled today. The final day still remains on Sat 20th August, so this means that the competition is now reduced to a 13 weeks instead of 14. Apologies.

Captain's Away Day
Whilst the morning weather on Sat 16th July for the Captains Away Day at Bicester looked as though it would be a wet afternoon, the determined dozen were rewarded with beautiful sunshine, a glorious day.
Well done to Jeremy Twaits who won with 31 points & John Day came in 2nd with 29 points.
Thank you to all those who have supported my away days I have thoroughly enjoyed them and for those who have not yet tried the Bicetser course, its a real jewel and you are missing out by not making the 50 min journey. A real asset to our membership.

Thursday Evening League - Week 8
A beautiful summer's evening with a light breeze .... so it's back to some good scoring again!! Twenty-three players scored 18 points or more this evening. At the top end, Kevin Robinson (Rec Soc) and Dan Seymour (Allsorts) scored 23 points apiece, but the individual winner this evening was Sarah Purvis (Fore Pears) with a fantastic 24 points.
The winning team this evening (and for the second week running) was Fore Pears followed by Rec Soc in second place and Allsorts third. Easily Second had an "off week" this week, but still hold on to top spot in the league eight points ahead of Birdies & Bogeymen who are 8 points in front of Captain's Eleven. We're only just past half-way, so still all to play for.

Seniors Open
A total of thirty-six players competed today in the annual Seniors Open. As well as home players, we welcomed twelve visitors from seven different clubs - some old friends who support this event yearly and some new friends who joined us for the first time today.
The day started with hot beverages and biscuits, then off to the course to play a four-ball better-ball Stableford. Our thanks go to the green staff for once again preparing the course in superb condition.

Third place was decided on count-back with Roy & Sam Whiting (NRGC) just beating Judy Willson (NRGC) and Tess Chantrey (Donnington Valley) after both teams scored 41 points. Home players Ray Tillen and Mike Workman won the battle for the final prize place from two other teams on count-back. Full result - click here.
Several other prizes were also presented on the day:

Nearest the pin - (2nd) - Mike Pritchard (NRGC)
Nearest the pin - (11th) - Rod Spring (NRGC)

Monty does it again!!
Two weeks ago, on just about the hottest day of the year, one of our esteemed senior golfers, Monty Norman, set out on his annual golf challenge to raise money for charity. The challenge involved playing four rounds of golf in one day.
I'm very pleased to report that Monty succeeded in his quest. Not only did he manage to complete the four rounds in a single day, but returned Stableford scores of 38, 36, 36 and 38 points. A fantastic achievement. Monty was accompanied during the day by four other seniors, Steven Vale, Lesley Cratchley, Judy Willson and Chris Moore playing one round each with him.
Monty's target was to raise £1000 for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity and, to date, he has received £997 with still some more pledges to be collected, so he will easily reach his goal. Of that money collected, £515 was donated by members at Newbury Racecourse Golf Club, so a huge thank-you to all who supported Monty and made donations.
WELL DONE MONTY!!!

Men's Roll Up - 10th July
Today's roll up, expertly run by Mark Richardson in my absence, was won by Jimmy Green with 40 points. The team prize was won by Jake Chambers, Andy Stockley, Jim Green Snr, and Paul Hickey who has rejoined the club recently after six years away. Paul completed a successful return by winning the nearest the pin competition on the 11th, winning again a fruit based drink.
Racing will again interrupt things next week though tees will be available for a shortened event for anyone who wishes to turn up.

Juniors vs Sherfield Oaks
The team played really well yesterday at Sherfield Oaks on a course unfamiliar to all - the match was halved. Lloyd Childs played particularly well leading the team off in the first match and performed incredibly well shooting under par for his round. The rest of the team played admirably some losing - some winning. It was a great team effort.
Our intention is to win the Junior League next year and the team are gaining valuable experience. Not only are they learning the arts of match play but they are also finding out about the courses they will have to play. Some are tough - very different from our home course and a schedule of clinics will be run throughout the winter months honing the long game to be able to cope with narrow fairways and trees!
It's been a great start by everyone and I look forward to the next match against Donnington Valley on 31st July.

Men's Roll Up - 3rd July
The men's Sunday roll up resumed today after a brief interlude with a very good turn out of 18 players. In ideal conditions scores were good with newcomers (to the roll up) Andy Stockley and Jamie Prater tying third with 40 points, left trailing by yours truly with 43 in second. The winner though was our guest Ken Kenyon with 46 points off his Newbury and Crookham handicap of 20 !! I will resist opening a debate about handicaps, but suffice to say Ken will be welcome again under a revised handicap. The team event was won by Ken, Jerry Kendick and Derrick Perrin with a combined score of 116. Mark Richardson won the nearest the pin on 14 and appropriately won a fruit based drink for the ladies.
The roll up will take place next Sunday; please register before 09.15 if you wish to play.
