Turkey Trot
Fourteen players for today's Turkey Trot 3-club challenge Stableford competition at the racecourse. Once again, a chilly north-westerly blowing across the course making scoring quite difficult. Well done to those who dressed for the occasion and in particular John Cooper in his full turkey outfit!!! We were all winners today as there were prizes for all the competitors - thanks to Sam Whiting for organising this and to Dean Butler for his extra contribution to the prizes and for presenting them afterwards.
Top scorer today with 30pts was Derrick Perrin. One point further back was Jon Miller (nice to see him back playing at the racecourse again). Stuart Briginshaw, Jason Allum & Sam Whiting were next in line all on 28pts.

Seniors Xmas Fayre
Today's event for the seniors at the racecourse was the Seniors Xmas Fayre. A 3-club Bowmaker Stableford with nine teams taking part. Scoring was particularly difficult today with a very strong north-westerly wind blowing across the course - tricky with a full set of clubs never mind just two and a putter!!
The winning team today were Richard Hook & Linda Vale (with just a little help from Doris!) scoring 64pts. Second place went to Paul Tebbutt, Roy Whiting & Christine Cooper on 61pts. Third place was decided on count-back With Harry Jackson, Steve Vale & Steve Thompson just edging out the two-man team of Chris Piper & Colin Cox. The top individual scorer today was Colin Cox with 32pts.

Following the golf and prize giving, the players and partners were treated to an excellent Christmas dinner. Huge thanks to Nuffield for providing a top quality meal for everyone and to Libby for organising and taking care of us today.

Ted Fitzsimons
So sad to report that Ted Fitzsimons passed away yesterday following a short but brave fight against cancer. Ted was one of the great characters at the club who was always ready with a kind word but a wicked sense of humour. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with Ted's wife Maree and his family at this sad time.

December Medal
Twelve hardy souls braved the freezing conditions first thing this morning to play in the December Medal and were rewarded with some nice sunshine later on (even though it didn't warm up too much!!). Scoring was particularly difficult with the changing temperature, but at least two of the competitors put together excellent scores in this Stableford competition.
The winner today with 38pts was Mike Miller who was closely followed by John Baron just one point behind him. Third and fourth places were decided by count-back with Jeremy Twaits just edging out John Day after both scored 30pts.

Just one 2 recorded today by John Day at the par 3 11th. Unfortunately, John was not in the two's pool so the prize fund rolls over to the January Medal.
This is the second medal of four which count towards the Winter Medal Aggregate (best 3 Stableford scores from the 4 winter medals). Mike Miller is currently leading on 67. John Butcher and Jeremy Twaits are just behind on the same total of 64.

Marian Taylor Memorial Golf Day
Newbury Racecourse Ladies, past and present, held a 9-hole Stableford competition, followed by lunch, in memory of past Lady Captain, Marian Taylor, who sadly passed away in August. The sun shone on the ladies as they took to the course; however, it was still playing long due to the deluge it received the day before. Coming home in first place was past Lady Captain, Sam Whiting, with her score of 17pts. Another past Lady Captain, Janice Paulin (now DG), took the second slot on count back ahead of Allison Holmes (also now DG), when they both carded 16pts. Thanks to Sian Soanes for the organisation and to John Taylor for attending the lunch and presenting the prizes.

Seniors Texas Scramble
Today's competition for the seniors was a Texas Scramble with twelve teams of 3 taking part. The weather wasn't too bad at all really - a bit chilly to start with but at least it stayed dry. Can't wait for the forecasted "heatwave" at the beginning of September. The pessimist in me thinks it will probably turn into another deluge!!!!
Today's winning team with a super score of 55.0 (gross 66) was Chris Moore, Sian Soanes & Colin Cox. Runners-up were Raymond Bilton, Richard Hook & Stephen Vale (58.0) followed by Harry Jackson, Roy Whiting & Chris Piper (60.0). Full result - click here.

Tonight's winner was the in-form Jeremy Twaits with another consistent performance and 18pts. Runner-up with yet another good showing was Diane McIntyre on 17pts followed by a quartet of players on 15pts.

Well done also to Dean and Dave who competed every single week of the league ... rain or shine!!

Also thanks to Ed Richardson for taking time out to organise the prizes and for attending this evening to make the presentations to the winners.
Hope to see you all next year!!

Captain's Day
Captains Dean Butler and Sian Soanes organised an excellent Captains Day today. A very good turn out of 35 players met at the starters hut at 08:15 for early morning drinks ready for the shot-gun start at 09:00. The theme for the day was "At the Beach" and well done to all those who entered into the spirit of the day by wearing colourful shirts, shorts, hats and other appropriate beach wear!!! It was a typical English day at the seaside with a chilly start, some heavy rain showers but also some welcome sunshine!
The competition was a singles Stableford with the beach theme continuing out on the course. All the bunkers were out of play and were adorned with wind-breaks, sand castles and deck chairs ... and for some reason(?), a parrot was perched on the 2nd flagstick?!?! There were double points available for any birdies on the 2nd/11th hole ... nobody managed that! But there were also some penalties ... anyone visiting the water on the last 3 holes of each nine were made to putt out wearing what looked and felt like industrial swimming goggles!!! There was also a chip in the paddling pool contest and more putting with giant sunglasses and a flotation aid!!! At the end of play, players were treated to a hot meal back in the clubhouse.
The winner of the main competition was Ofer Ben-David on 41pts. Runner-up was Roy Whiting just one point behind Ben. Third place was decided on count-back with Richard Mead edging out John Day, Steve Vale and Chris Moore after all scored 38pts. The leading lady was Dianne McIntyre on 37pts. Full result - click here.
Longest drives were won by Sam Whiting and Dave Warwick and the Nearest-the-Pin prizes went to John Butcher and Sandy Deacon.
Many thanks to Dean and Sian for organising this excellent day of fun and thanks to all competitors for completing your rounds making it a fantastic success.

Thirteen players (11 men and 2 ladies) for today's mixed medal. This was the first medal played on the new layout with the different tees in operation. I think we all agree it makes it a lot more interesting!!

Marian Taylor
It is with great sadness that I have to report that one of our senior stalwarts Marian Taylor passed away on Friday 1st Aug after a long and brave battle in hospital with heart problems. Marian, a previous lady captain at the club, will always be remembered as a truly lovely lady who always had kind words for everyone. Our thoughts and prayers are with John and the rest of his family at this really sad time.

Club Championships
Club Championship weekend at the racecourse for both men and ladies with round one played on Saturday and the concluding round two played today. Steamy hot weather on Saturday was replaced by slightly cooler conditions today with a squally shower or two towards the end of the competition. Only a small field this year with many players away, but that doesn't diminish the achievements of the winners.
Special thanks to Richard Holmes and his team for preparing the course for the championships, a very early cut of the greens on both days and different pin positions on both days as well.
In the ladies competition, two steady rounds from Sam Whiting ensured that she captured the Ladies Club Champion title with a total of 178. Lady captain Sian Soanes was runner-up. In the ladies nett competition, Dianne McIntyre led after round one and continued her good form to the end to win the cup with rounds of 74 and 73.

Jeremy Twaits was the runner-up. In division 2, Brian Grace was the round one leader but was overtaken on day 2 and the prize went to Mike Miller with a total of 161. Today's event for the seniors was an individual mixed Stableford with twenty five players (22 men and 3 ladies) taking part. This week was the second and final round of the Ladies and Men's Senior Club Championships. Conditions were excellent and again our thanks to the green keepers for preparing the course in great condition.
In the Ladies competition, congratulations to Linda Vale who came out on top in both the gross and nett categories, but as the rules say you can only win one prize in this event, the nett prize goes to Jan Hinks. For full details click on the links below.

Match at Bishopswood
A nice afternoon was had by all as Bishopswood welcomed Newbury Racecourse for
a mixed four ball match.
The weather was pleasant and the course looked in beautiful
condition.
In the end Bishopswood prevailed with a score of 4 to 1 with some excellent
golf on their home course. Paul Hickey and Diane Mcintyre played very well to secure the only point for the Racecourse.
We look forward to a return match next year at the
Racecourse

Message from Paul Hickey
I need to announce that as from June 20th, I will be leaving my post as Club
Captain at the Racecourse.I am moving home to East Sussex which sadly is a little too far to travel
to play golf regularly at the Racecourse.
I have carried out the Captains duties for around about 9 months
now working alongside Sian Soanes the Lady Captain and the Club Committee. I have been a member of this club for a few years now and have really
enjoyed playing social and competition golf with the most fantastic group of
people.
I thank all the members for making this club a thoroughly enjoyable place
to come and play golf and long may it continue.
I am very thankful for being able to work with and be supported by
a hardworking dedicated group of people who make up the committee and I thank
them for helping me with my duties as Captain over the time I have been doing
it.
At the beginning of my Captaincy we were still playing the old 18 hole
layout just prior to all the new changes starting and the move to a 9 hole
layout in the middle of the racecourse.
We had Captains Drive in, a Mixed Open and a few other events leading up to
the Last Hurrah ( last day on the old 18 hole layout) in January.
During that time we raised fantastic amounts of money which went to a
number of good causes including rarer cancers and GOSH.
We also had a very enjoyable presentation evening during February just
prior to the old clubhouse closing.
Having now moved to a 9 hole layout and into Nuffield Health as a base we
move on to the next stage in this clubs history.
For that I would also like to thank Ed Richardson and his team for all
their efforts and determination despite much red tape in getting the club to
where it is now and in the future.
I really wish everyone well for the future and look forward to coming back
and playing the course occasionally.
Lastly I would like to thank Dean Butler for taking over from me until the
end of the year.
Dean is a well respected Member and I am sure members will be really
pleased that Dean has taken the role on.
I am sure you will all support him as much as you did me.
My last event as a member will be the Mixed Pairs match at Bishopswood on
Sunday 15 June 2014.
I hope I get an invite to the odd non member event and the next
presentation evening.
Play good golf everyone and Goodbye,
Paul Hickey

Seniors Club Championships - Round 1
Round one today for the Seniors Club Championship. Twenty-five men and three ladies took part in today's event in beautiful weather. With the course in excellent condition (our thanks to the green staff for that), all was set fair for some good scoring ... but it never happened?!?! Nobody played to their handicap and consequently both the ladies and men's competitions were calculated as "reductions only".
In the men's event Paul Tebbutt leads the way in the gross category closely followed by Brian Faithfull, Harry Jackson and John Butcher. Ted Fitzsimons is at the top in the nett competition just ahead of Harry Jackson and John Clark. For full details - click on the links below:

Tuesday Evening League - W5
Week 5 of the Tuesday Evening League tonight and the best weather we've had so far!! Warm sunshine but a bit of a stiff breeze to keep everyone on their toes and making scoring quite tough. Thirteen players fought it out for the weekly prize. The winner this week was Roy Martinez with a creditable 19pts. In second place was Dean Butler on 17pts followed by Dave Warwick & Ian Martinez just one point further back.

Chris & John Golf Challenge
John Butcher & Chris Moore at the start |
There were a number of people who supported them throughout the day either playing some holes with them or just generally encouraging them. Thanks to Gary Moore, Les Eden, Tom Wallin, Judy Willson, Marlene Moore, Peter Smith, Paul Tebbutt, Stuart Briginshaw and Barbara & Errol.
John & Chris at the finish!! |
Chris & John completed their four rounds at approximately 5:30pm with no breaks in between rounds which is a tremendous effort.
Most importantly, they have so far raised more than £3000 in donations for this effort which is a fantastic sum. Chris & John would like to personally thank all the people that have sponsored them to raise this money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Seniors June Medal
Not quite sure what has happened to "flaming June"!?!? It was a wet and wild day at the racecourse today for the monthly seniors medal making scoring extremely difficult for the 20 players brave enough to take part.
The winner with a score of nett 72 was Mike Pritchard. Two shots further back was runner-up Sam Whiting, the leading lady in the competition and the lowest gross of the day (88). Third place went to John Butcher on nett 76.

Just one 2 recorded today by Sam Whiting on the par 3 17th.

Tuesday Evening League - W4
Eighteen players for week 4 of the Tuesday Evening League tonight. Still waiting for a completely dry Tuesday, but everyone seemed to enjoy the evening.
The scoring was very close this week with 2 points separating the top ten players. With 4 players all scoring 18 points, the winner had to be decided count-back. Stuart Briginshaw came out on top with a slightly better back 6 holes than the others. Just missing out on the same score were Jason Allum, Jeremy Twaits and Ian Martinez.

June Medal
Probably the best golfing conditions of the year so far!!
Lovely warm sunshine, very little breeze .... beautiful!!
Sixteen players set out to enjoy the day playing in the June medal. Those who weren't able to play from the short grass, didn't find things quite as enjoyable as the ones who did - the rough is extremely penal!!
One person who enjoyed it more than most was today's winner Roy Whiting who returned a very impressive nett 65. Runner-up on nett 69 was John Cooper. Third place went to John Butcher who just beat Jeremy Twaits on count-back - both scored nett 73.
Full result - click here.
Just one 2 recorded today by John Day on the 11th. Unfortunately, John was not in the two's pool so the kitty rolls over until next month.
