February Junior Medal

This month's Junior medal was played today in not very pleasant conditions. The competition was played as a Stableford off the white tees. The clear winner was Danny Glover (19hcp) who amassed an excellent 38 points. Runner-up was Club champion Curtis MacGeever (4hcp) who just pipped Luke Bannister (26hcp) on countback after both scored 34 points.

Early days, but in the race for this year's Junior Masters Trophy, Max Nicholls and Jack Unsworth are just ahead of Lloyd Childs and Danny Glover. A long way to go yet !!!

Juniors vs Newbury & Crookham

The return fixture was played today to gain revenge for the 4 - 2 defeat we suffered at Crookham. Curtis MacGeever, who is a member of both clubs, played for Crookam and was beaten by our Captain for the day Max Nicholls. The other players, Jack Unsworth, Chris Richardson, Danny Glover, Luke Bannister and George Baker achieved the desired result with a 4 - 2 victory. Well done team I am confident we can do well this season in the Hants and Berks League.

Seniors v Juniors

In weather more appropriate for a regatta rather than golf, the annual Seniors vs Juniors match took place yesterday with six four ball matches being played. It was a credit to the Juniors that they fielded just about their strongest side in the match, and were duly rewarded with a 6-0 victory, although some of the matches were quite close. Well done to both Seniors and Juniors for completing the matches on an abysmal day.

The remaining 17 seniors not involved in the match played a singles Stableford in which Captain John Graham and Lady Captain Maria Tillet were invited to play as guests. The clear winner with 39 points was Barry Heath. Richard Hook took the runners-up spot from Rod Spring on countback after both scored 31 points. Both captains were presented with bottles of wine as a thank-you for their participation.

Astres Foursomes

Although quite chilly, today's Astres Foursomes was played in good conditions in a light south-easterly breeze. Twenty-four pairings teed it up to compete for the prizes.

Scoring was extremely close at the sharp end of the leaderboard with thirteen teams all within four points of the winning score. As you would expect with the field that tightly bunched the result had to be decided on countback. The top three teams all carded the same score of 39 points. The winners were Danny Glover & Mark France whose 20 points on the back 9 secured the victory. Runners-up were Astres specialists (winners for the last two years) Barry Heath & Geoff Denner. Third place went to luckless Andrew Buchanan and Lesley Cratchley whose back 6 score was not quite enough to get to second place.

Pace of play footnote.
The average time for today's rounds was 3hr 15min.
The committee will continue to monitor timings over the next few months and make all competitors aware of their responsibilities regarding pace of play. Thank-you for your patience and participation.

February Weekday Stableford

Unfortunately, very few entries (so consequently very little by way of prizes) in this months weekday Stableford. The very small number of entries was almost certainly due to the re-scheduled racing on Friday following the tragic events of the weekend before.

This months winner with 35 points was John Day (10hcp) and runner-up was Frank Morley (25hcp) with 32 points.

Clubhouse

The clubhouse will be open from 7:30am on competition days from this Sunday starting with the Astres Foursomes. The kitchen will stay open for last orders at approx 3:00pm allowing all competitors to come off the course.

It would be helpful when arriving at the 13th to give your order to the kitchen, as long as this doesn't unduly delay play and affect our Pace of Play rules.

Presentation Evening

(Apologies for the delay in reporting this - but we have been consolidating the pictures)

The annual NRGC presentation evening was held last week on Sat 29th January. A superb meal (thanks to Fiona and her team) was followed by the giving out of the trophies to the individual winners and runners-up. The Captains Award this year was presented to Andrew Buchanan.
Following this there were laughs and impressions galore from professional entertainer Steve Tandy who was well received.
Many thanks to all who attended and supported this event.

You can view pictures of the evening by following the links below.
If you wish to have a printed copy of any of the pictures, please contact Andrew Buchanan who will be pleased to supply them at a minimal cost of £1 per photo. The proceeds from this will go to this year's charity (Action For Children).

February Medal

The last of this winter's Stableford medals from the yellow tees was played yesterday. Thirty-six men and six ladies competed for the prizes in blustery conditions so scoring was not easy (it never is!!!!).

Division 1
The top division was extremely close with 2 points separating the top six places. Three players were tied at the top with 36 points, but count-back ensured Roger Tillett (12hcp) emerged as the winner over Max Nicholls (7hcp) and Jon Miller (10hcp). Fourth place on 35 points was also decided on count-back with Ian Folwell (11hcp) just edging out John Day (10hcp).

Division 2
The top score in division 2 this month was also 36 points with Andrew Buchanan (13 hcp) the clear winner. Two points further back, count-back decided that Roy Whiting (18hcp) finished just ahead of Mark Richardson (13hcp).

Division 3
36 points was again the winning score in division 3. This time Patrick Brind (22hcp) took the honours. Mike Chamberlain (22hcp) was a close runner-up with 35 points followed by third-place Peter Turner (21hcp) on 33 points.

Ladies
After three medal wins last year, Sarah Purvis (24hcp) continued her good form and opened her account early this year with another win. Just one point behind was runner-up Maria Tillett (16hcp) carding 31 points. Third place went to Lucy Mortimer (17hcp) on 29 points.

Just as a footnote ....
As many of you will know by now, the committee are making determined attempts to speed up the pace of play in competitions which in all honesty (in a number of cases) has been unacceptable and a frustration for all.
The good news was that all groups were round today in 3 and 3/4 hours or less which is an excellent achievement. Well done to everyone !!!! Let's make this the rule NOT the exception.

Ken Boxall

It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that Ken Boxall died suddenly in hospital last night. He had attended a family re-union last week-end, and was a bit under the weather, and yesterday deteriorated and was taken into hospital, where he died peacefully.

Ken was a well liked and respected senior member of the Golf Club who up until about a year ago played regularly on Wednesdays with the seniors.

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
