Not the best of weather for the John Ives Memorial Trophy played today. It was raining virtually non-stop for the first 9 holes, but it did brighten up for the second nine!!! Sixteen players competed for the prizes in this four-ball better-ball stroke-play competition.
The winning team with a score of nett 70 were Phil Knight & Jason Allum. Runners-up were Paul Hickey & Jeremy Twaits who just pipped John Butcher & Sandy Deacon on count-back after both teams scored nett 71.

Who is this?

Anyone recognise this rather stern looking chap playing in the Pro-Am at Wentworth this week? His caddie looks a lot happier than him .... probably because he's getting paid!!!
Or maybe Wentworth turned down the quote he gave them for re-decorating the clubhouse?!?!? Apparently, he played with Joost Luiten ... lucky fella!!

Tuesday Evening League W2

The Tuesday Evening League completed it's second week last night.
So far we have 19 players involved, but it's certainly not too late to come along and join in. You would be made very welcome. Just turn up on a Tuesday Evening - tee times are normally from between 17:30 and 18:00. There is a weekly prize for the best score on that evening and prizes at the end of the competition for the best 7 scores out of the 14 or 15 weeks.
On week1 Mike Pritchard was the best of the evening and Dean Butler took the prize in week 2.

Injured Jockeys Fund

Visit to Oaksey House, Lambourn.

On arrival we were cordially greeted by Lady Oaksey, wife of the founder Lord Oaksey, and we were given a comprehensive tour of the buildings.

I was surprised to find that Oaksey House, opened in 2009, is a light and airy state of the art building with eco-friendly features. Situated in the main building there are communal areas for work or leisure with photos and memorabilia of the racing world.  Large paintings enhance the walls and there is a function room and kitchen that can be hired out. There are several treatment rooms, clinic rooms and gyms to facilitate the recovery of injured jockeys

Across the garden from the house are independent living apartments for retired jockeys and their families, and rehabilitation apartments for jockeys as they recover from injury.

Oaksey House is a resource greatly appreciated by many jockeys. My cheque was gratefully received and will be used as needed.

Grateful thanks to all who contributed to my Captains Charity.

NRGC vs Donnington Valley

Donnington Valley 4 1/2 NRGC 1/2
After a full English Breakfast 5 Men's pairings set off around Donnington Valley Golf Course in cool but dry conditions.Golf Course knowledge and some good play from the Home Team helped them to a fine victory. Dean Butler and John Cooper managed to secure a half point with some good golf. The Donnington Valley Course is tight with lots of things called trees. The green keepers will be pleased to see that lots of us trimmed them a little bit as we went round. We all gathered at the end for a drink and some food to end the day.
The Donnington Valley Team were a friendly accommodating bunch and a pleasant day was had by all despite the result for NRGC. We look forward to welcoming Donnington Valley back to the Racecourse next year for a return match.I would like to thank all the players for representing the club today and an extra mention for Dean and John for scoring a half in their match.
Paul Hickey.

Seniors vs Deanwood

The seniors played a friendly match at Deanwood on Friday 9th May in some very windy weather. Not quite the result we hoped for with Deanwood winning by a comprehensive 5 1/2 to 1/2. Well done to Geoff Denner and Les Eden for securing the half point!!
A good day enjoyed by all!!

Seniors May Medal

Tough conditions today at the racecourse for the May Seniors Medal competitions with a strong breeze blowing and some squally showers to add to the excitement!! The scoring reflected just how tricky it was. There were separate medal competitions for both men and ladies today.

In the men's medal, John Butcher was the victor with a nett 76 and the lowest gross of the day (89). Runner-up was John Clark on 77 followed by Chris Piper who just pipped Harry Jackson on count-back after both scored 78.
Full result - click here.
[A big thank-you to John Day who was earlier reported to have won the medal. He realised when he got home that he had recorded and signed for an incorrect (lower) score on one of the holes and had the courage and integrity to report this and request a DQ]

The ladies medal was won by Sam Whiting also with a nett 75 followed by Jan Hinks with a nett 81.

Just a single 2 recorded today by ladies winner Sam Whiting at the 17th hole.

Longest Day Golf Challenge

On Monday 9th June 2014, Chris Moore and John Butcher will be playing four consecutive rounds of golf on the same day at Newbury Racecourse.

You might say ... why on earth would they do that?!?!

Well, the answer is to raise as much money as possible for charity - more specifically for Macmillan Cancer Support,  which is a charity very dear to us at Newbury.

How can you help?
The best way, is to donate some money to this worthwhile cause. You can either donate on-line by visiting Chris & John's JustGiving page on the web by clicking here. Alternatively you can hand your donation directly to Chris or John at the Golf Club.
Please donate as much as you can - all donations will be gratefully received and the full amount will go direct to Macmillan.

May Medal

Fourteen players today in the May Medal. Weather conditions were ideal with some nice warm sunshine and a gentle breeze blowing. The problem is ... the recent warm weather coupled with the rain has made the rough really tough!!! You don't need to wander far off the fairway to be in trouble ... if you can find the ball!! I noticed a lot of provisional balls being played today!!!
Today's winner with a nett score of 71 was Paul Hickey (who must have managed to stay on the short stuff most of the time!!). The runners-up spot was decided on count back with Dave Warwick just ahead of Roy Whiting after both returned nett 74.
Full result - click here.

Dave Warwick scooped the two's pool today with an excellent 2 at the long par 3 8th hole.

The Owen Millennium Trophy and Summer Medal Aggregate competitions have now reached the third month. Only those who have played all 3 medals so far are shown on the latest standings below.

Yellow Ball Competition Draw

Yellow Ball competition at Newbury & Crookham Monday 5th May.

Seniors vs Bradfield

The Seniors welcomed the players from Bradfield to the racecourse today for a friendly match. Twelve players from each team played in six four-ball matches with the Racecourse narrowly winning by 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. All the players enjoyed an excellent two-course meal in the Nuffield Centre after the match.

The big question is ... Did he fall, did he dive, or was he pushed?
There is always an element of risk partnering Chris Moore as Les Eden found out today after an unscheduled visit to one of our carefully manicured, but very deep ditches. Luckily, after some excellent first aid administered by Libby, Les is OK.
